Rum da Madeira, commonly known as sugarcane brandy, is a rum with Protected Geographical Indication produced in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. It is obtained exclusively through the alcoholic fermentation and distillation of sugarcane juice, making it an agricultural rum that offers unique quality and characteristics derived from traditional production processes and generations of accumulated experience. Located on Madeira’s northern coast, in the village of Porto da Cruz, the Engenhos do Norte house one of the three historic distilleries still in operation on the island. Built in 1927 as a result of merging some of the roughly fifty distilleries that once existed on the island, it still uses machinery from that era and is the only distillery in Europe to employ steam as its motive power.
