The Alvarinho variety has remained in the Melgaço region for years, with vines traditionally planted along the edges of fields while cereals occupied the center of the plots. In 1974, João António Cerdeira and his parents, António Esteves Ferreira and Maria Cerdeira, broke this tradition and planted the first continuous plot of Alvarinho vines in Melgaço, christening it “Soalheiro” because of its sun exposure. João António’s pioneering spirit marked the family’s history, which has since been tied to Alvarinho production in Melgaço.
