The Alvarinho grape has been part of the Melgaço region for years, with vines traditionally planted along the edges of the fields while cereals filled the plot centres. In 1974, João António Cerdeira and his parents, António Esteves Ferreira and Maria Cerdeira, broke this tradition and planted the first continuous Alvarinho vineyard in Melgaço, naming it “Soalheiro” for its sunny exposure. João António’s pioneering spirit shaped the family’s history, which has since become synonymous with Alvarinho production in Melgaço. Today, the third generation carries on the legacy, extending their vision to organic winemaking. (illustrative image only)
