Taylor's Vintage 2018 Port: The 2018 growing season was unusual and had a marked effect on the wine's character. The previous year had been very dry and hot, and by January 15, almost two-thirds of the country was suffering from drought, with the Douro Valley one of the most affected areas. Fortunately, heavy rains in March prevented damage to the vineyards and replenished groundwater reserves. The growing season from March through the end of June was relatively cool and humid, causing mildew in some areas. The devastating hailstorm of May 28 caused extensive damage to vineyards in the Pinhão region, including Taylor's Quinta do Junco. The vines' development was about three weeks behind that of 2017, with flowering at the end of May and harvest in the last week of July. Hot, dry conditions prevailed throughout July, followed by a very intense heatwave in August. On August 3, the weather station at Taylor's Quinta de Vargellas recorded a temperature above 44°C. The extreme heat allowed the vines to recover some of the lost time, and the abundant groundwater accumulated early in the year meant that, despite the hot conditions, the grapes ripened gradually and in balance. The harvest at Quinta de Vargellas began on September 17 under hot, dry weather, which continued throughout the harvest. Yields were very low, and the winemaker's notes report that the new wines displayed elegance, fresh fruit, good acidity, and intense color. Allergen information Contains sulphites. SKU: 105646
