As in France, where the finest vineyards are classified as the famed grand cru or premier cru, there is a corner of Sicily north of Etna called the contrade. In this case we are looking at San Lorenzo from Tenuta delle Terre Nere, one of Italy’s major wineries, where they craft this red wine from the native Nerello Mascalese grape. It stands out for its profile of ripe fruit and spices, and this vintage was awarded Italy’s best wine by the influential international critic James Suckling.
