Tawny wines are reds made from the same grapes as Ruby wines, but they age only two to three years in barrels before moving to casks. This allows greater contact with wood and air, so tawnys breathe more, oxidise, and mature quickly. The high oxidation causes them to lose their initial red hue, adopting lighter amber tones and flavours of dried fruit such as nuts or almonds. With age, tawnys gain even greater aromatic complexity, enriching their bouquet. The vintage year may not correspond to the image shown (illustrative only).
