The lands that would become Vega Sicilia were contested for years between Peñafiel and the Monastery of Valbuena, and it was in 1477 that the monks and the council reached an agreement. The latter would hold jurisdiction and the arable land, while the monks would control the forest cover. It was not until 1577, however, that the name Vega de Sicilia first appeared in history, referring to the estate. For centuries the property was exploited and bought from the Marquess of Valbuena by Toribio Lecanda in 1848, at which point his son Eloy Lecanda began producing wine professionally in the estate’s cellar. Consequently, there arose a need to build facilities, offices and ageing cellars. The aim was to produce wine of quality rivaling that of Bordeaux. In 1982 the Álvarez family acquired the property, staying true to that goal – wine is made only in exceptional vintages. (Illustrative image)
