The lands that would become Vega Silicia were contested for years between Peñafiel and the Monastery of Valbuena, and it was in 1477 that the monks and the council reached an agreement. The council would hold jurisdiction and the arable land, while the monks would maintain the forest cover. It was only in 1577 that the name Vega de Sicilia first appeared in history, referring to the estate itself. For centuries the property was worked and later purchased from the Marquis of Valbuena by Toribio Lecanda in 1848, after which his son Eloy Lecanda began producing wine professionally in the estate’s cellar. This prompted the need to build new facilities, offices and aging warehouses, with the aim of producing wine of quality comparable to that of Bordeaux. In 1982 the Álvarez family acquired the estate, staying true to that goal – wine is produced only in years of exceptional harvest. (illustrative image)
