This Lacrau Moscatel from Quinta da Faísca in Favaios, Douro, is a delightful surprise. The producer clearly understands that a truly great Moscatel needs a site with “temperate climate, high altitude, and generous space” – and they’ve certainly worked to achieve that. The result is a strikingly pale, intensely coloured wine with a dry, almost assertive acidity and a full body, boldly defying convention. Yet, it ultimately reveals a persistent finish, reminding us that the Douro sometimes likes to keep us on our toes. A wonderful match with grilled white fish, perhaps?
