Grand Noir de la Calmette is a teinturier — a red grape with red-stained flesh as well as red skin — created in the south of France in the late 19th century. Historically used to deepen the colour of Languedoc blends, the variety has largely fallen out of favour as growers shifted to noble international red grapes. Plantings have shrunk to negligible amounts; mostly preserved in ampelographic collections and a few experimental sites.
