Touriga Francesa

About this grape variety

The most widely planted red grape in the Douro Valley, Touriga Franca is the quiet workhorse of fine Port and Douro DOC reds. Where Touriga Nacional supplies aromatic intensity, Touriga Franca provides colour, body, soft tannin and floral red-fruit perfume (rose petal, blueberry, raspberry). It buds and ripens later than Touriga Nacional, reducing frost and disease risk. The two grapes were long thought to be related, but DNA analysis confirms they are distinct.
