Viognier

About this grape variety

Once nearly extinct — reduced to 14 hectares in the world by 1965 — Viognier has roared back, particularly in its Condrieu homeland and across the New World. The grape produces wines of distinctive ripe peach, apricot, honeysuckle and ginger aromatics, with a full, oily texture and moderate acidity. Best from very ripe fruit, which produces the trademark perfume. Viognier is sometimes co-fermented with Syrah (as in Côte-Rôtie) to soften and perfume the red.
