Melhor de Portugal 2017 – Wine Magazine Arinto dos Açores is an indigenous and exclusive grape of the Azores, sharing only its name and good acidity with mainland Arinto. Its terroir is truly one‑of‑a‑kind: in the middle of the Atlantic, at the base of the volcanic mountain Pico, vines are planted in rock fissures beside the sea, where the “crab song” can be heard—this is where the sun and warmth are most generous. The close proximity, sometimes just a few metres, requires protecting the vineyard with walls (hedges) against the strong, salty Atlantic winds. (illustrative image only)
