It is said that the principal mentor of Madeira wine was Infante Dom Henrique, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Candida grape—originally from Candia in Crete—on the island of Madeira, a venture that proved successful. By the mid‑15th century Madeira wine was already being exported, with trade routes that reached Europe, where it was prized for its refinement and even used as perfume for the court ladies’ handkerchiefs. The prestige of this nectar was such that references to it are common in history, the arts, and the legends of various nations. The bottling year may not correspond to the image shown.
