It is said that Prince D. Henrique was the principal patron of Madeira wine, encouraging the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape—originating from Candia in Crete—on the island of Madeira, a venture that proved very successful. By the mid‑15th century Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes that included Europe, where it was prized for its refinement and was even used as a perfume for the ladies of the court. The prestige of this nectar was such that references to it are common in history, the arts, and the legends of several nations. The bottling year may not correspond to the image shown.
