The name José Maria da Fonseca is closely tied to Moscatel de Setúbal, to the point of becoming almost a synonym for this great wine that originates in the Setúbal region. In reality, some of the world’s best moscatels are born at the very old family firm. José Maria da Fonseca was founded in 1834 by José Maria da Fonseca, who had just finished his studies at the University of Coimbra as a mathematician. He founded the company, and fifteen years later, in 1849, the Moscatel de Setúbal brand was born. Although JMF is mainly known for its outstanding moscatels, it has also created timeless table wine brands such as Periquita (established in 1850) and Lancers (1944). The JMF moscatels are rare relics released slowly and are a must‑stop. The oldest moscatels in the region belong exclusively to this company and are absolutely unforgettable, standing shoulder‑to‑shoulder with the world’s best fortified wines like Porto and Madeira.
