Very few producers, especially in Madeira wine production, experience a revolution as significant as Barbeito’s. Becoming a bulk wine supplier and suddenly emerging as a regional benchmark in the Madeira wine area is a remarkable feat, given the stiff competition at the time. All of this unfolded in 1991 when Ricardo Freitas joined the family firm and, together with the Japanese Kinoshita partners, set out to make Barbeito one of Madeira’s most important wine producers. That same year a further major shift occurred: for the first time, wine production fell under the sole responsibility of a family member. Two years later, Ricardo harvested his first vintage entirely independently, forging a team unified by the motto “produce quality wines with our own style.” The bottling year may not match the accompanying illustration.
