Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal, founded in 1922 under the name João Pires & Filhos, has come a long way, establishing itself as one of the most innovative wine producers in Portugal. The company began by making wines from grapes grown in the Palmela region. Throughout the 1980s, Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal began expanding, acquiring vineyards across the country and setting new standards for quality wine production. Quinta da Bacalhôa, regarded as the most beautiful estate from the first half of the 15th century still standing in Portugal, is an old property of the Portuguese Royal House. Located in Azeitão, the estate and the famed Palácio da Bacalhôa together form an artistic monument of great national significance. Today, the Quinta is owned by the Fundação Berardo, a foundation belonging to the family of the same name whose patriarch is Commander José Berardo. It was classified as a National Monument on 23 June 1910. In the surrounding area visitors find picturesque villages, wine cellars, and one of Portugal’s most beautiful and imposing landscapes – the Arrábida Natural Park.
