This António Saramago, born in the Setúbal Peninsula with a touch of Trincadeira and Aragonez, arrives with a quite menacing ruby hue – as predicted by its impressive 18.5 points at Grandes Escolhas. The lengthy maceration has resulted in a wine with a noticeable tannin structure demanding a certain reverence, but thankfully, the 18 months spent ageing in French oak have beautifully softened it, revealing a surprising elegance. The long finish, underscored by a bright Setúbal acidity, hints at the ripe red and black plum flavours, and it would be fantastic with a hearty beef roast.
