After an extraordinarily long period of aging, the Bastardinho Apothéose from José Maria da Fonseca, crafted from the Trousseau grape, was stored in a small barrel that was over 80 years old. Only 40 bottles of this precious wine were produced, and this one (Bottle No. 2) is the first to be sold at auction, now available at the National Wine Store for all interested parties. The remaining bottles of this fabulous nectar, according to winemaker Domingos Soares Franco, will be auctioned at a pace of one per year. Its exclusivity lies in being the only Bastardinho de Azeitão aged over 80 years on sale, and it is entirely irreplicable due to its provenance. On the southern bank of the Tagus, between Costa da Caparica and Lavradio, the extraordinary vineyards that produced this and other Bastardinhos of JMF disappeared from the map in the 1980s because of urban pressure, and without these grapes one cannot make a Bastardinho de Azeitão; thus this wine should be savoured with great rigor and solemnity.
