Villa Oliveira from Casa da Passarella is made from Encruzado grapes harvested from a vineyard that is over 40 years old. It was fermented in a wooden vessel and then aged for nine months in oak barrels. The wine displays a citrus‑hued color and aromas of white fruit and lychee. On the palate it is full‑bodied, fresh and elegant, finishing with a long, lingering aftertaste. We’re looking at a producer who has risen from the ashes. He came to stay and write a new chapter, but the house’s story dates back to the 19th century, when it was first built. Great wines were born here and in these vineyards—remember the P63, once vinified by José Maria da Fonseca? Fate had the place “abandoned” to the world of wine, leaving only a faint memory of the great vintages that were born there. Yet it also hoped that the new owner would be a person of good taste, with extreme dedication to crafting and refining wines. Thus the new Casa da Passarella was born, poised to write a fresh chapter in the house’s history and in the Dão region.
