Rui Roboredo clearly has a rather intense connection with the grapes of the Douro Superior. This Castello D’Alba Reserva was crafted with almost obsessive care – hand-picked grapes, cold maceration, inert presses… and regular battonage to “confer a touch of sophistication” to the final blend. The result is a white wine that seems to revel in the company of oak (French and American, plus battonage), and frankly, it’s probably thanking him for it. Pairs beautifully with grilled fish, perhaps with a squeeze of lemon – perfect for balancing the wine’s considerable complexity.
