It seems the Antinori family are remarkably persistent in their pursuit of historical significance. Six centuries of winemaking, dating back to 1385, and they’re now confidently proclaiming “innovative choices.” This Castello della Sala white hails from a property once overseen by Angelo Monaldeschi della Vipera, a German adventurer of the 9th century – perhaps Charlemagne wasn't entirely astute in sending people to Italy. Located in Umbria, “halfway between the Paglia River and the peak of Monte Nibbio,” the wine thrives in a soil remarkably rich in fossilized seashells and a texture reminiscent of a perfectly executed mascarpone pudding. The Pinot Noir, unsurprisingly, seems to have discovered its own personal Eden, and for good reason – the dramatic temperature swings of the site are frankly, a little *too* generous. Prepare for a wine that, frankly, boasts more personality than humility.
