Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family‑run business that initially dealt in fine Douro wines and liqueurs. It is the oldest family wine company still operating in Anadia; in the 1930s, when the production of Port wine outside Vila Nova de Gaia was prohibited, it shifted to selling Bairrada table wines. At the end of the 1950s the celebrated Bairrada label “Frei João” was launched, followed a little later by the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the demarcated Dão region. (Illustrative image)
