Château Cheval Blanc From its first medal, won in 1862 at the London World’s Fair – a medal that has since adorned its labels – Château Cheval Blanc has, over the decades, established itself as one of the world’s greatest wines. Its grace, its alchemy, and its elegance embody a refined French culture of unmatched quality. Winemaking The general guidelines for vinification at Cheval Blanc are based on a fresh grape ripening, strict separate‑batch vinification, the use of selected indigenous yeasts grown on the estate, gentle extraction, prolonged maceration, manual remontages, and a single de‑gassing over the four weeks of maturation. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in vats, followed by aging in barrels. The 2020 vintage aged for 16 months in 100 % new oak barrels. Production: 100 908 bottles Bottling: 7 July 2022 2020 — An Extreme Year The 2020 vintage was extreme, marked by a severe drought during the summer and very high temperatures during the harvest. The wines reflect these climatic conditions perfectly, presenting an intense, mature nose and a powerful, dense tannic structure. Vegetative Cycle The 2020 crop was early, from budding to harvest. The particularly mild March encouraged rapid vegetative development. Average flowering occurred on 21 May and average fruit set on 19 July for Merlot, and 2 August for Cabernet Franc. The grapes displayed homogeneous ripening, with few differences within the plots. Harvest took place between 3 and 23 September. The frequency and intensity of spring rains created a very high mildew pressure, which was progressively neutralised by the dry, hot summer conditions. At harvest, numerous scorch marks were observed on the grape clusters exposed to the setting sun.
