The estate was purchased in 1863 by Baron Nathaniel Rothschild, who immediately changed its name from Château Mouton de Pauillac to its present title, Château Mouton Rothschild. It survived several turbulent periods until 1922, when Philippe de Rothschild took the reins; the château rebirthed itself with its first bottling in 1924. From the 1945 harvest onward—already established as a great wine—every label began to feature illustrations by celebrated contemporary artists such as Picasso, Chagall, Miró, and others. In recognition of its stature, Château Mouton was elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the elite of Médoc wines. Its wines are powerful and rich, yet they possess a sense of finesse and a velvety texture when aged. They are truly magnificent and unforgettable. Made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, the blend varies from year to year, but Cabernet Sauvignon always remains the dominant grape. Over the years, many wines have emerged from this house, and countless stories have unfolded within the gates of the magnificent château. The wines speak for themselves, and even if they are among the world’s most sought-after bottles, many of them rank among the best wines ever produced.
