Description

The estate was purchased in 1863 by Baron Nathaniel Rothschild, who immediately renamed it from Château Mouton de Pauillac to its current name, Château Mouton Rothschild. It weathered a few turbulent times until 1922, when Philippe de Rothschild took the reins, and the estate rose from the ashes with its first bottling in 1924. From the 1945 vintage onward, already recognised as a great wine, every label began to feature illustrations by renowned contemporary artists such as Picasso, Chagall, Miró, and others. In recognition of its status, Château Mouton was elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the elite of Médoc wines. Its wines are powerful and rich, yet they possess a sense of finesse and a velvety texture when aged. They are truly magnificent and unforgettable. Made from the grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot in proportions that vary from year to year—though Cabernet Sauvignon always remains predominant—many wines have been born in this house over the years, and countless stories have passed through the doors of the magnificent château.
