Château was purchased in 1863 by Baron Nathaniel Rothschild, who immediately changed its name from Château Mouton de Pauillac to the present Château Mouton Rothschild. It survived a number of turbulent times until 1922, when Philippe de Rothschild took the reins, and the château was reborn from the ashes with its first bottling in 1924. From the 1945 harvest onward, already regarded as a great wine, all the labels were illustrated by famous contemporary artists such as Picasso, Chagall, Miró, and others. In recognition of its quality, Château Mouton was elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the elite of Médoc wines. Its wines are powerful and rich, yet carry a sense of finesse and a velvety texture when aged. They are truly magnificent and unforgettable. Made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot in varying proportions from year to year, the blend always features Cabernet Sauvignon in the majority. Many wines have emerged from this house over the years, and countless stories have unfolded within the doors of the magnificent château. The wines speak for themselves—indeed, some of the most sought-after wines in the world come from here, as many of them are among the best ever produced globally. (Illustrative image only)
