The Château was bought in 1863 by Baron Nathaniel Rothschild, who immediately changed its name from Château Mouton de Pauillac to the present Château Mouton Rothschild. It survived several turbulent periods until 1922, when Philippe de Rothschild took over, resurrecting the estate with its first bottling in 1924. From the 1945 vintage, already celebrated as a great wine, every label was adorned by renowned contemporary artists—Picasso, Chagall, Miró, and others. Recognised as a great wine, Château Mouton was elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the pinnacle of Médoc wines. Its wines are powerful and rich yet possess a finesse and velvety texture when aged. They are truly magnificent and unforgettable. They are crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, in proportions that vary year to year, but Cabernet Sauvignon remains the predominant grape. Over the years, many wines have been born in this house, and countless stories have unfolded within the walls of the magnificent Château. The wines speak for themselves, ranking among the most sought‑after in the world, as many are among the finest ever produced.
