The lands that would become Vega Silicia were contested for years between Peñafiel and the Monastery of Valbuena, and in 1477 the monks and the council reached an agreement. The latter were given jurisdiction over the arable land while the monks retained the forest cover. It was not until 1577 that the name Vega de Sicilia first appeared in history, referring to the estate. For centuries the property was worked and eventually bought from the Marquess of Valbuena by Toribio Lecanda in 1848; his son Eloy Lecanda then began producing wine professionally in the estate’s cellar. Thus the need arose to build facilities, offices and aging warehouses, with the aim of producing wine of quality comparable to that of Bordeaux. In 1982 the Álvarez family purchased the estate, staying true to that goal – wine is produced only in exceptional harvest years.
