Description

Jean‑François de Pontet was appointed to the court of Versailles, where he served as Grande Équitateur (Master of the Horse) for Louis XV. Upon returning to Guyenne, he became Governor of the Médoc. In 1705 he bought a few hectares of land north of the village of Pauillac, planted vines there, and gave the estate his own name to create a distinct identity. A century later, Château Pontet‑Canet was flourishing and became one of the few wineries selected to join the famous 1855 classification, ordered by Napoleon III. Today the property is owned by Guy Tesseron’s descendants—Alfred and his aunts Mélanie and Philippine—who together have ushered in a new era for Château Pontet‑Canet, embracing organic and biodynamic viticulture. The wines have advanced to the point where they now rank among Bordeaux’s most prestigious. (Illustrative image only)
