In 1988, a Danish‑American couple set sail in search of a place to start a family, plant a vineyard, and make wine—a fairy‑tale dream that launched Cortes de Cima, now one of Portugal’s leading wineries. Located in Vidigueira, the family estate is run daily by Hans and Carrie Jorgensen over 140 ha of vines planted with Aragonês, Syrah, Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, Petit Verdot, Antão Vaz and Verdelho. The oldest vines, planted in 1991 when Syrah was still prohibited, were a bold experiment by Hans, who believed the local climate and soil were perfect for the Rhône variety; he produced the first Syrah in 1998 under the name *Incógnito*, which quickly earned acclaim in Portugal and medals in London, Brussels, and Bordeaux.
