In 1988, a Danish man and an American woman set sail in a sailboat in search of a place to raise a family, plant a vineyard, and make wine. A fairy‑tale dream that sparked the story of Cortes de Cima, now one of Portugal’s leading wineries. Located in Vidigueira, the estate is run daily by Hans and Carrie Jorgensen and spans 140 hectares planted with Aragonês, Syrah, Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, Petit Verdot, Antão Vaz, and Verdelho. The oldest vines were planted in 1991, before Syrah was allowed under regional regulations. Still, Hans, convinced the climate and soil were perfect for this Rhône variety, produced the first unofficial Syrah in 1998, sold under the name Incógnito, which quickly gained notoriety in Portugal and earned medals in London, Brussels, and Bordeaux.
