Domaine de Bargylus “The best wine produced in the Eastern Mediterranean is… [Bargylus]…” – Jancis Robinson & Hugh Johnson, World Atlas of Wine, 7th edition, 2013. The city of Latakia lies in the Orontes Valley, at an altitude of 900 metres, near the mountain Jabal Al‑Ansariyeh and 60 km from the Mediterranean Sea. The vineyard covers 12 hectares, with vines aged between 14 and 19 years (since 2003). The planting density is 6,250 vines per hectare, with yields ranging from 1 kg to 1.5 kg per vine. The harvest is carried out manually, picking grapes in small 15‑kg boxes and subjecting them to a rigorous selection, sometimes performed in two passes in the most challenging years. The soil consists of clay, limestone and siliceous material, giving a unique terroir. Harvest takes place from early September to mid‑October, with an average annual rainfall of 1,100 mm. The Bargylus Red blend is composed of 60% Syrah, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. Vinification includes double selection of the grapes, gravity‑driven transport, and gentle extraction through “pigeage” (manual head immersion), complemented by remontages. The wine ages for 14 months, 20% of which is spent in new barrels. Maturation involves gentle extraction with “pigeage” and “pumping over” (remontages).
