This Tinto Cão, hailing from Freixo de Numão in the Douro Superior, is a delightful reminder that the high terroirs of this region still hold some surprises. The altitude – between 400 and 600 metres – certainly contributes to a slow, considered ripening that highlights the robust character of the variety. Initially bursting with fresh fruit, it quickly develops sophisticated vegetal notes, beautifully balanced by the subtle influence of oak – clearly worked with by a skilled hand. A truly elegant and food-friendly wine, with the intensity you’d expect from Tinto Cão, perfectly complemented by a refreshing acidity. Ideal with roasted red meats, or perhaps a hearty wild boar stew.
