The Quinta da Vacaria, one of the oldest estates in the region (first recorded in 1616), is situated on the banks of the Douro River beside the town of Régua, in the heart of the world’s oldest demarcated wine region – the Douro. At the estate’s quay, the Rabelo boats would dock to load the barrels full of Port wine and carry them to Gaia, at the mouth of the river, where they were sold wholesale around the globe. Because these wooden hulls bore no producer’s seal, the wine’s identity was hidden. Upon arrival, the wine was bottled and labeled with the brand of the foreign merchants who purchased it, some of whom later gained considerable prestige. (Illustrative image only)
