Quinta da Vacaria, one of the oldest estates in the region (its first recorded mention dates from 1616), sits on the banks of the Douro River beside the city of Régua, in the heart of the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, the Douro. At the estate's quay, Rabelo boats once docked to load casks filled with Port wine and carry them downriver to Gaia, at the river's mouth, where they were sold in bulk to markets around the world. In this way, the wine left its origins behind, its identity hidden, since these wooden casks were not even marked with the producer's seal. Upon arrival, the wine was bottled and labelled under the brand of the foreign merchants who had purchased it, some of which went on to earn considerable prestige.
