This Fonseca Quinta do Panascal Vintage appears to have decided life’s too short for hiding away. It’s an incredibly concentrated wine – almost as if it’s spent a little too long maturing – but what a delight! Expect abundant notes of cooked plum compote and hot marmalade, reminiscent of a sweetness that practically demands a slice of almond cake. Maturation on the old vines imparts a velvety texture, with bursts of cherry and plum, punctuated by hints of lapsang tea and spices. A supremely seductive experience, perfect alongside a nice grilled fish, or, if you’re feeling particularly bold, a bit of hearty suckling pig.
