Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal, founded in 1922 under the name João Pires & Filhos, has come a long way, establishing itself as one of Portugal’s most innovative wine producers. The company’s early focus was on producing wines from the Palmela region. Throughout the 1980s, Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal began expanding, acquiring estates across the country and creating new paradigms for quality wine production. Located in the Douro—Portugal’s oldest demarcated region and a UNESCO World Heritage site—Quinta dos Quatro Ventos looks like a vast Japanese sand garden, with a lone pigeon loft standing out against the horizon. The grounds of this century‑old estate were once part of Quinta das Figueiras (now Quinta do Vesúvio), which belonged to the Count of Lapa. Around 1890, it was reportedly purchased by Dr. José Maria Saraiva de Aguilar, then a Royal Magistrate and Solicitor in São João da Pesqueira. His descendants kept the property until 1996. Three years later, the 150 hectares of Quinta dos Quatro Ventos were acquired by Aliança (now part of the Bacalhôa group) for Douro wine production. In 2001, Aliança changed the estate’s name—from the former Quinta de Porto de Bois, reflecting its location near Porto de Bois—to Quinta dos Quatro Ventos, to emphasize the property’s concave layout that encourages strong wind currents in all directions.
