Gaja Winery was founded by Giovanni Gaja, great‑great‑grandfather of Angelo Gaja, in 1859. It has remained in the family for four generations. The estate is located in the Barbaresco and Barolo districts of Piedmont. In 1994 they purchased their first Tuscan property, Pieve di Santa Restituta, of which 40 hectares are planted with Sangiovese and produce two Brunello di Montalcino wines. In 1996 Gaja acquired a second Tuscan estate called Ca’Marcanda in Castagneto Carducci, Bolgheri. The focus at Ca’Marcanda is on international varieties, with 150 hectares planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah vines.
