This Gáudio is a seriously evocative fortified wine from the Alentejo, promising a nostalgic journey back to the days of spice trading. The extended ageing in oak – evident in its deep ruby colour – delivers intriguing notes of nuts and spices, perhaps reminiscent of the spice routes to India. Rich and remarkably persistent, it’s a fantastic match for aged cheeses or game dishes, as the producers themselves suggest, and, naturally, they received a commendation from the Fortified Wines Club for it.
