Thomas Reynolds, English sailor and merchant, arrived in Portugal in 1820, attracted by the wine trade, and had two sons, Thomas and Robert. From Porto he supplied his commercial warehouse in London with Iberian products. In 1838 they entered the cork industry in Spain, expanded to Portugal and ultimately settled in Estremoz. After the family moved to New Zealand, Robert stayed in Estremoz at the head of the business, which he quickly developed by acquiring new land and producing quality wines—a pursuit he carried out with particular dedication and passion. Alentejo became the definitive birthplace of the Portuguese Reynolds and of Robert, the family patriarch. From that cradle came Robert’s eldest son, Robert Rafael, and from him, Carlos. Carlos had a first daughter named Gloria, Gloria Reynolds. In her honour, and that of all his ancestors who lived in Alentejo, Julian, Gloria’s son, produces a quality wine named after his mother – Gloria Reynolds. (image merely illustrative)
