Artur de Barros e Sousa Lda. was founded in 1890 by Pedro José Lomelino and has remained a family‑run business ever since, with Artur and Edmundo Olim, fourth‑generation descendants, standing out. It was the smallest Madeira wine producer on the island, annually producing between 8,000 and 10,000 litres with a total storage capacity of 85,000 to 90,000 litres. The changes made to the estate over the years were very few, turning it into a living museum. The Madeira wines of Artur de Barros e Sousa (ABSL) are delicate and almost fragile in structure, gaining much with age. In their youth they may seem simpler, but ageing adds complexity and depth. In 2014, Artur de Barros e Sousa was acquired by neighbouring Pereira D’Oliveira, the current owner of the company. The bottling year may not correspond to the image presented.
