The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports dating 25 years after its discovery. On Madeira Island, vines are grown in small plots of earth known as “poios,” supported by earthen walls on the mountain slopes, many of which are difficult to access. The island’s unique soil and climate, along with the production process and the grape varieties grown, have contributed to Madeira wine’s unparalleled distinction over the centuries. In addition to these factors, 30 grape varieties are used to produce this fortified wine, with the most esteemed being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malvasia.
