Very few producers, especially in the Madeira wine sector, have experienced a revolution as profound as Barbeito’s. Going from a bulk wine supplier to becoming a regional benchmark in Madeira wines is a remarkable feat, given the strong competition at the time. All of this unfolded in 1991, when Ricardo Freitas joined the family firm and, together with the Japanese Kinoshita partners, transformed Barbeito into one of Madeira’s leading wine producers. That same year, another major shift occurred: for the first time, wine production became the responsibility of a family member. Two years later, Ricardo completed his first harvest without external oversight, setting the stage for a team built around a shared motto: producing high‑quality wines with a distinctive style.
