Description

The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the discovery of the island that gives it its name, with records of the first productions and exports appearing 25 years after its discovery. On Madeira, vineyards are grown in small earth terraces known as “poios”, supported by stone walls on the mountain slopes, which are often difficult to access. The unique soil and climate of Madeira, as well as the production process and the grape varieties cultivated, have contributed to the unmatched distinction of Madeira wine over time. In addition to these factors, there are 30 grape varieties used in the production of this fortified wine, with the most prized being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malvasia.
