It is said that the mentor of Madeira wine was Infante D. Henrique, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape, originally from Candia in Crete, on the island of Madeira – a venture that proved to be a success. By the mid‑15th century Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes that included Europe, where it was prized for its refinement and even used as a perfume for the ladies’ lace. The prestige of this nectar was such that it is frequently referenced in history, art, and the legends of several nations. The bottling year may not correspond to the image shown.
