Very few producers, and especially in the production of Madeira wine, find in their history a revolution as great as that which occurred with Barbeito. Becoming a bulk wine supplier and, out of the blue, a regional benchmark for Madeira wines is a huge achievement, given the fierce competitors at the time. All of this happened in 1991, when Ricardo Freitas joined the family firm and, together with the Japanese Kinoshita, decided to turn Barbeito into one of the most important Madeira wine producers. That same year a further significant change took place at Barbeito: for the first time, wine production became the responsibility of a family member. Two years after Ricardo’s arrival, he completed his first harvest without external supervision, thereby laying the groundwork for a team that shares a single motto: produce quality wines with a distinctive style.
