Description

The story of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports dating 25 years after its discovery. On the island of Madeira, vines are grown in small plots of earth called “poios,” supported by terraced walls on the mountain slopes, which are often hard to reach. The island’s unique soil and climate, as well as its production process and the grape varieties cultivated, have contributed to the unparalleled distinction of Madeira wine over time. Beyond these factors, 30 grape varieties are used for producing this fortified wine, the most esteemed being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho, and Malvasia.
