The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports appearing 25 years later. On Madeira, vineyards are cultivated in small earth terraces called “poios,” supported by earthen walls on steep, often inaccessible mountain slopes. The island’s unique soil and climate, together with its production process and the grape varieties grown, have contributed to Madeira wine’s unrivalled distinction over the ages. In addition to these factors, 30 grape varieties are employed in the production of this fortified wine, the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malvasia.
